The beautiful gardens adjacent to the present-day Pakistan-Indian border were build during the reign of the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan.
Built in the year 1641 A.D, the Shalimar Gardens in Lahore are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Measuring 658 meters north to south and 258 meters east to west in the form of an oblong parallellogram they contain 410 fountains and 5 water cascades and and are surrounded by a high brick wall. Canals and lush vegetation provide a some relief for visitors during Lahore's hot summer months. It is only a few miles from the Indian border at Wagah.
