The elder brother of Sardar Patel and also a formidable politician, he was often at odds with Gandhi and founded the Swaraj Party. He was jailed in 1930 and due to poor health was released in 1931 and allowed to go for medical treatment to Switzerland where he died in 1933. An ink note at the back of this postcards reads:
"Bar-at-law-President of the Viceroy's legislative assembly till Jan. last when he resigned & took up national work. He is just now in [illegible] jail – suffering from piles and just able to [walk?] a distance."
