Princess Jahanara's Tomb was built during her lifetime and completed in 1681, the year of her death. Constructed entirely of white marble with intricate lattice work screens, it originally had four small marble minarets at the corners, but only two remain.
The tomb is open to the sky, as per Jahanara's wishes. She was the daughter of Emperor Shah Jahan and specifically wished to be buried in a simple enclosure close to the Dargah of Hazrat Nizamuddin Auliya, the Sufi mystic whose teachings she revered.

His tomb, a Sufi shrine, was originally constructed in the 14th century by Muhammad Bin Tuglaq and rebuilt in the 16th century. His grave lies inside the tomb under layers of chaddars and rose petals, and remains an enormously popular pilgrimage site for people of all faiths.
