Government College (now a university) is one of the oldest colleges in Pakistan and currently has more than 6000 students and 300 faculty members. Many of Pakistan's elite and ruling classes studied or taught here, including the poets Dr. Muhammad Iqbal and Faiz Ahmad Faiz and Nobel Prize Winner Dr. Abdus Salaam. A number of important Indian scientists and writers also attended Government College before 1947, including Nobel Prize winner Har Gobind Khorana, writers Prakash Tandon and Khushwant Singh, and actors Dev Anand and Balraj Sahni.
